PONSACCO: The series of summer events presented in Ponsacco is causing controversy. The discussion initially sparked political debate within the last city council meeting, and then broadened to the general public when posters for the " Under the Ponsacco Sky " program began circulating. The program includes a concert with the Pooh tribute band, a screening of Federico Fellini's I Vitelloni, and William Wyler's Roman Holiday. At the center of the controversy, however, is the regional pre-selections for Miss Italy on Sunday, July 27th.
"I congratulate Councilor Chiara Calderani on her new responsibility for culture," said minority councilor Irene Meini. "I'm convinced she will have a different approach to 'raising the cultural bar' and won't fall victim to events like the Miss Italia pageant, for which we spent €13,000. From an ethical standpoint, at least for me, this event poses some ethical questions, given that it raises a bar to evaluate the physique of young women. It's an event that not even RAI broadcasts on television anymore." During the last council meeting, Mayor Gabriele Gasperini assigned Councilor Calderani the responsibility for culture, and budget changes were discussed, including one that allows for the summer events. "We've been hosting big names like Ron, Morgan, Vessicchio, Bentivoglio, and Servillo, just to name a few, in Ponsacco for years," reiterates Democratic Party Councilor Irene Meini. "Now, for purely political reasons, with the idea of erasing everything good from memory, they've decided to trash a cultural event that was growing year after year and was bringing countless people to Ponsacco. On several occasions, the mayor has professed himself a champion of culture, capable of raising the cultural bar for events organized in Ponsacco. This is the calendar he has managed to offer citizens for the summer of 2025, with Miss Italia as the flagship event." Criticism of the famous beauty pageant stems from the model it presents to young girls and the judgment placed on their bodies. "We believe," she concludes, "that the €13,000 could have been better spent on a different event that truly could have held its own against the events offered in past years."
